Description:
In this activity, developed by the Lane Community College MAPS GIS Program, students are asked to investigate the distribution of Chinook salmon in the Columbia River basin using GIS technology and web-based maps. The objectives of the lesson are for students to be able to "use GIS to investigate historic changes in salmonid habitat, understand the factors affecting fish habitat, and improve map skills and problem solving." On the site, visitors will find a link to the student activity, some introductory material about GIS and the web-based viewer used in this lesson. The link to the actual data leads visitors to the wrong map, but you can access it by clicking here. This is an excellent activity for high school or early undergraduate students for hands-on work with GIS and population ecology.
