Title: Sloan Digital Sky Survey - Asteroids
Url: http://skyserver.sdss.org/dr1/en/proj/basic/asteroids/
Publisher: Sloan Digital Sky Survey
Description: This Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) project teaches students how to detect asteroids using the pictures taken by the survey. The first asteroid was discovered in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi, and since then many more have been observed; ranging from a few meters long to 900 km across. Due to how the SDSS takes pictures of the sky, using 5 filters, asteroids can easily be identified: they leave colored dots. Using the survey data, the student is asked to go through several pictures and pick out the asteroid in them.
